Unveiling the NCLEX: Understanding the Maximum Number of Questions

The NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses) and NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses) are standardized exams used in the United States for licensing nurses. The maximum number of questions a candidate may have to answer on the NCLEX is determined by the Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) format.

In CAT, the test adapts to the individual's ability. The exam starts with a minimum number of questions (75 for NCLEX-RN and 85 for NCLEX-PN). As the test progresses, the computer adjusts the difficulty of the questions based on the candidate's performance. If the candidate answers questions correctly, the next set of questions may be more challenging. If they answer questions incorrectly, the difficulty level may decrease.

The minimum and maximum numbers of questions are set to ensure that the exam provides a reliable measure of a candidate's competence. The test will continue until one of the following conditions is met:

1. NCLEX-RN:

   • The candidate has answered a minimum of 75 questions.
   • The candidate has answered a maximum of 265 questions.
   • The computer has determined with 95% confidence that the candidate's ability is above or below the passing standard.

2. NCLEX-PN:

   • The candidate has answered a minimum of 85 questions.
   • The candidate has answered a maximum of 205 questions.
   • The computer has determined with 95% confidence that the candidate's ability is above or below the passing standard.

It's important to note that the number of questions alone does not determine whether a candidate passes or fails the NCLEX. The passing standard is based on the candidate's ability to demonstrate a minimum level of competence. Candidates receive a "pass" or "fail" result at the end of the exam based on their performance relative to this standard.
