Who were the first colonists to come to America?
The first permanent English colony in what is now the United States was established at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607 by the Virginia Company of London. These early English settlers were the first to establish a permanent settlement in the Americas.
Prior to Jamestown, there were earlier European expeditions and settlements, including the Spanish colony of St. Augustine, Florida, founded in 1565, and the Roanoke Colony in North Carolina, which was established in the late 16th century but mysteriously disappeared.
It's important to note that there were already indigenous peoples living in North America long before the arrival of European settlers. They had diverse cultures, societies, and histories, and their interactions with European colonists had profound and often tragic consequences for their communities.
